My Keyword Academy Case Study for Passive Income – Choosing a Keyword and Domain for My Niche Website

by Tiffany on April 2, 2010

*If you haven’t done so already, I recommend you check out my original post on my Keyword Academy case study to get up-to-date on the specifics of my case study. You do not need to be a member of Keyword Academy to follow this case study, but it may help.

When you are building your own niche website, keywords can really make or break you. To me, doing proper keyword research is probably the most important aspect of a niche website. Even if you do everything right with your website and even obtain the #1 spot on Google, if your keyword was not chosen correctly you will not make money.

Recently the guys out Keyword Academy came out with a tool called Niche Refinery to make keyword research a whole lot easier. I not only use this keyword tool for my niche websites but also for writing articles on revenue sharing websites as well. There is a certain formula that KA teaches to decide if a keyword is going to be profitable and this tool basically takes out a lot of steps in the process.

For my case study for creating online passive income, I already had a few keywords that I was looking at for my next blogs, so I decided to choose one of those. No, I am not going to reveal the keyword, niche or domain name (I may do so in the future depending on how profitable it turns out, but I doubt it.) There are several reasons why I don’t want to do this and if you are an Internet marketer who makes niche websites you probably already know the reasons.

The Information on My Chosen Keyword

  • It is a 2 word phrase
  • It is not a physical product but rather in the service field.
  • There are 4400 exact searches a month
  • The Adsense CPC is $24.55
  • It has a difficulty of 79 – the higher the number the harder it may be to rank in the top spots on Google. At this point I don’t pursue anything over about 225.
  • According to the KA formula it has a potential of making $539.66 a month.

The Specifics on my Domain for My Niche Website

The next step is registering your domain name for your niche website. The Keyword Academy teaches people to register domains that have their keyword in the domain. I have seen other products and Internet marketers teach this as well and have seen proof that it works.

The ideal domain name would be keyword.com, but that is not so easy to come by anymore. For my keyword the .com and the .org were taken so I needed to add something on to my keyword to get my domain. There are plenty of simple prefixes and suffixes that you can add to your keyword to get pretty good domain names that still have your keyword in them. For my case study, my domain is keywordsuffix.com.

I bought my domain name through NameCheap.com for $8.81 (search Google for a discount as there is usually one available). This also included a free Whois guard for one year. I already have a hosting account through Hostgator that allows unlimited domains. This account runs me about $6-$7 a month.

The Progress of My Niche Website

So far as of tonight I have my WordPress theme uploaded and I played around with it a little bit to get it to the way I wanted. There is no content on the site yet but I plan on getting at least 2-3 posts up tomorrow, so I should have at least 5 pages of content up by Monday, which was my goal.

I plan on starting on the guest posting links for the website next Monday after I have the 5 pages done on my website. The goal is to get 25 of these done a month, but for my niche I am not sure if I can write that many articles on the topic, but we shall see.

Even though it is a holiday this weekend I will most likely still be working because I want to get this niche website up and running so I can start making some passive income on it.

It’s not too late to get started on your niche website and join in on the case study.  As you can see it doesn’t take a lot of money to get your website up and running and best of all you can join Keyword Academy for only $1 for the first 30 days! (Just so you know the monthly membership for KA is $33, Court and Mark announced that the fee will be going up soon because of all the extra tools they have added to the system. My advice: Get in while the cost is still $33 a month and not $67!)

Thanks. The keyword looks pretty good and hoping that it does turn out to be a profitable one.

I noticed you mentioned that the .com and .org were not available. What about .net? Do you advise against .net domains and if so, why?

I probably just forget to add the .net into this blog post. I actually have a few .net domains & haven’t heard anything against them. Usually when finding a domain, I go with the .com first, then the .org, then .net and if all are taken I re-evaulate the domain name. I don’t know if .org or .net are better, but for some reason I just do it like that.
