If You Think Can’t… A Post on Mindset

by Tiffany on October 7, 2011

I have read several forums and talked to several people who are trying to make a passive income online and I see it all the time. They start using life as an excuse for not making money saying ”I can’t because…”

Just some of the common excuses I have heard include:

I can’t because I have kids

I can’t because I have a full time job

I can’t because I don’t have any money

I can’t because I don’t have time

I can’t because I’m too old

I can’t because I’m afraid

Do any of these excuses sound familiar to you?

Here’s the thing, if you think you can’t, you can’t!

Having a Positive Mindset Goes a Long Way in Making Money Online

I’m not here to judge anyone, because I have been there. There have been several times in the past few years where I thought it was going to be impossible to make the kind of money I wanted. I didn’t think I had the time or I just didn’t think I was good enough.

What I realized was that my mindset was actually holding me back. Having a negative mindset will do nothing but hold you back.

Having a positive mindset and thinking that you can do this and you can make the kind of money will only help your income grow. Now, this doesn’t mean that you can simply think you will make 6 figures a year and then not put in the work. It means that if you stay positive, realize you can do it and stop making excuses, the work will pay off.

There will be failures along the way as they come with any business venture. But the key is to not let those failures keep you down and instead learn from them.

 Throw the Excuses Away

There is never going to be a time in your life where there are perfect conditions for making a passive income.

If you use the excuse that you have kids and don’t have time, then when your kids are grown or are older you’ll just use a new excuse like you now have debt or you are too old to learn this stuff again.

If you use the excuse you don’t have money, then look for free options. Start out writing for HubPages or Squidoo and use free backlinking resources like article directories or bookmarking sites. Once you build up your income, then you go buy a small hosting plan for a few dollars a month and a domain for under $10 a year.

If you use the excuse you have a full time job, then how are you ever going to get out of that 9-5 if you don’t start working on your business now?

You see, life is never perfect. Its life and sometimes you have to make sacrifices, get a little less sleep than you are used to or push yourself beyond what you thought you could do.

So, stop saying “I can’t” and start focusing on how you are going to make it work.

Tiffany,

I’ve heard all of those excuses and then some!

Two of my sisters are also married with kids and I’ve encouraged them to build residual income online through niche sites, but they haven’t yet. One sister has created two niche sites but hasn’t added pages in over a year … the other wrote a few eHow articles but nothing since.

Anyway, I think there is also a certain amount of online success that comes from having a personality/ temperament that’s willing to go out on a limb and just keep working on things even when success seems dubious.

Best of luck to you!

Maria – I agree with you when you say that you have to have a certain disposition to be willing to make your hand at an online passive income. The money doesn’t come right away and you never know when one of your great ideas will turn into a total dud and not make any money. It’s definitely not for everyone.

Just found your site through your comment on No Job For Mom. This is so true. If you think you can’t, you definitely won’t.

Thanks for stopping by Kristine! Yep, it’s amazing how much your thinking influences how successful you are.

I can’t because I’m too old
I can’t because we weren’t taught in school
I can’t because I was told I had to get a good job
I can’t because I’m scared

For most people its the last one – the weird thing is half the time I think we’re actually scared of success!

Yep, I sounds funny to say but being afraid of success is actually a big reason why people don’t ever end up succeeding.

Hi Tiffany,
I have learned through the years that it is important to do the inner work if you want to experience it in the real world. Limiting beliefs about why we can’t do something is the number one reason why people fail in life.
