Free Picnik Alternatives

by Tiffany on April 22, 2012

I used to use the site Picnik quite a bit when it came to resizing pictures, editing pictures, and even making photo collages for my site. Even when using stock photography I like to make my pictures look a little different than the normal ones by cropping them or adding my own unique touch to them.

Well, if you have ever used Picnik you most likely have seen that the site has now closed down. I never paid for the full subscription so I really didn’t feel like finding a replacement that cost me money. I know there are other programs that you can download to your computer that can do just about the same thing (like GIMP) but for some reason I like the quick, website ones that to me, are easier to use.

Anyways, I was able to find a few different free Picnik alternatives and thought I would share them with anyone else who may like to use these photo editing sites for their pictures.

My collage from iPiccy that took me 2 minutes to make!

If you visit Picnik.com right now you will notice that they have moved their tools to Google+. I personally won’t be using that at all (I’m sure there are other IMers out there that are on the same page as me) So, I can’t comment on that one but you can check it out for yourself if you like.

PicMonkey

The other site that is now recommended is PicMoneky.com. This site works in basically the same way that Picnik used to as you don’t even have to log in to upload a photo and do basic edits on it. You can really do all sorts of edits with this site and I haven’t really dug into the site that much yet, but this is definitely a very good free alternative to Picnik. It is easy to use and pretty straightforward.

One of the features I liked on Picnik was the ability to make collages and it appears that PicMonkey will be adding that feature very soon.

BeFunky

BeFunky.com is another free alternative to Picnik that is also pretty cool. It offers tons of different edit options and you can upload pictures from your PC as well as places like Facebook, Flickr, and photobucket. They even have some pretty neat “goodies” that you can add to your pictures that can make your pictures look a little more original. You can even use these “goodies” to make a unique header for your site as well.

iPiccy

The site iPiccy.com is yet another free Picnik alternative that doesn’t require you to sign in or register in order to use the editing features. It looks very similar to what Picnik used to look like and seems very straight forward and easy to use.

It appears that the site is still in beta, but I have known several websites that have been in beta for years!

They recently added a collage feature if you are interested in that as well (check out the collage above that literally took me 2 minutes to make.) When you check out the collage feature they have a lot of different templates to choose from which is really nice to have. I know that I have used collages on several of my sites to make the post more unique.

Pixlr and Pixlr Express

I haven’t really played around with Pixlr.com yet but they are another free option for photo editing. You can upload photos from your computer, webcam or from a web address. They do seem to have several editing features and if you played around I’m sure you could find some neat things.

As you can see there are several free alternatives to Picnik and you don’t have to go out and pay for an expensive program like Photoshop if you are just doing simple and quick photo edits and want something easy to use.

With the huge interest in Pinterest right now it is definitely a smart idea to add unique and attention grabbing pictures to your websites.

Thanks Tiffany, I never tried these programs. Just made a new header for one of my sites.
